Ensuring Electromagnetic Compatibility

Electromagnetic Compatibility

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is concerned with the unintentional generation, propagation or reception of electromagnetic energy which may cause unwanted effects such as electromagnetic interference (EMI)/noise or even physical damage to equipment.

We need to ensure the RCD can withstand such conditions and not become adversely affected. We must also ensure the RCD will not “nuisance” trip yet still provide protection. There are two potential conditions that the RCD may become exposed to; Conducted and radiated conditions. Conducted involves the EMC type noise being carried on the conductors that pass through the RCD. Radiated refers to noise that is transmitted over the air which can adversely affect the RCD.

At Western Automation we ensure that our RCD designs exceed the requirements of the relevant product standards in terms of noise immunity.
