International Standards for RCDs
RCD technology is an area of increasing complexity, as demonstrated by the following:
- In 1990, IEC published the first international standards for RCDs, IEC61008 covering RCCBs, and IEC61009 covering RCBOs.
- In 1996, IEC published IEC61543 covering EMC requirements for RCDs. In more recent years, IEC published IEC61540 for portable RCDs, and IEC62640 for socket based RCDs.
- In 2009, IEC published IEC62423 for B Type RCDs, which are used for detection of AC and DC residual currents, and for F Type RCDs which are used for detection of residual currents with multiple frequency components.
Pat Ward, the founder and Managing Director, has been involved in all of this work within IEC.
With such a proliferation of RCD standards and requirements, many companies have found it increasingly difficult to keep up with the changing environment, and have found it beneficial to source RCD technology externally.
