Job Specification for:
Mechanical Design Engineer

Main Responsibilities

  • Design of mechanical components, in particular electrical switching mechanisms.
  • Design plastic components for use in electrical accessories.
  • Conduct detailed mechanical analysis (stress, FMEA, thermal, tolerance analysis, reliability, etc) of existing products to determine weaknesses and implement improvements.
  • Specify plastic and metal materials suitable for various applications.
  • Produce 3D models and 2D drawings.
  • Build and test prototype metal and plastic parts and manage the related sourcing and quality issues.
  • Support electronics engineers working on projects with mechanical components.
  • Work closely with toolmakers making injection and compression moulding tools for plastic parts.
  • Work closely with vendors on supply of pressed, turned and plastic parts.
  • Use precision measurement equipment to verify dimensional accuracy of mechanical components.
  • Assist in transfer of products from design to manufacturing.
  • Work to exacting international product standards.
  • Communicate project status and progress on a regular basis.

Qualifications / Experience / Skills / Attributes

  • Degree level mechanical or electro-mechanical.
  • Minimum of three years relevant experience.
  • Able to work in a highly flexible team environment.
  • Good knowledge of 3D CAD, preferably Solid Works.
  • Good knowledge of basic electrical principles.
  • Understanding of basic principles of magnetics.
  • Familiarity with electro - mechanical devices.
  • Knowledge of simulation techniques, including FEA.
  • Able to apply FMEA methodology.
  • Good knowledge of materials and their properties, especially plastics and metals used in the switchgear industry.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes used for moulded, pressed and turned parts and of the relevant design considerations.
  • Communications: Fluent written and spoken English with excellent record keeping and report writing skills are required.

 

Job Specification for:
Manufacturing Test Engineer - Electronics

Main Responsibilities

  • Manage all production test activities at our Ballinasloe site and co-ordinate activities at our vendor and customer sites. Includes capacity & capability planning.
  • Write, manage and maintain production test specifications and related work instructions for all Western Automation sub-assemblies and products.
  • Design, prototype, procurement, commissioning and documentation  of test equipment, including controllers and fixtures. Includes local and vendor locations.
  • Manage health and safety aspects of test equipment and provide user training.
  • Manage the calibration of all equipment and instruments on site.
  • Support other departments as required, e.g. assist in analysis of customer returns, debug, root cause analysis, technical support for customers, conduct tests in our Test Laboratory, etc.
  • Liaise with New Product Development to provide DFT (Design –For – Test) inputs at an early stage in product design.
  • Reporting on systems status and key metrics, (pass rates, downtime, costs, etc.) and record keeping to support all the above activities.

 

Qualifications / Experience / Skills / Attributes

  • Degree in Electronic Engineering, with ideally 2 years relevant experience.
  • Capabilities in both analog and digital electronics.
  • Competence in PLC programming.
  • Good soldering skills. (Training can be provided.)
  • Comfortable working with “Mains” electrical supply and suitably safety conscious.
  • Ability to work as part of a team in a fast paced environment.
  • Willing to innovate and propose initiatives for new developments and continuous improvements.
  • Some mechanical aptitude for working with test fixtures and small assemblies.
  • Communications: Fluent written and spoken English with excellent record keeping and report writing skills are required.

 

 

Job Specification for:
Electronics Design Engineer

Main Responsibilities

  • Design of analogue electronics circuitry.
  • Prototype and test new circuits.
  • Design to requirements of international standards.
  • Interface directly with customer engineers.
  • Assist with circuit diagnostics and fault finding.
  • Participate in design reviews.
  • Be willing to travel occasionally to meet customers and suppliers.
  • Communicate project status and progress on a regular basis.

Qualifications / Experience / Skills / Attributes

  • Degree level electronics qualification.
  • Three years experience working in Electronics.
  • At least 2 years experience in a design environment.
  • Methodical approach to problem solving.
  • Ability to specify electronic components to achieve targeted performance.
  • Familiarity with general quality requirements for electronics assemblies.
  • Ability to work both as part of a highly flexible team and on your own.
  • Some experience of FMEA methodology would be an advantage.
  • Some experience of working with “Mains” voltages would be an advantage.
  • Knowledge of basic electro-mechanical devices.
  • Communications: Fluent written and spoken English with excellent record keeping and report writing skills are required.
