Role
- To research and develop innovative technologies and solutions for application in electrical switchgear products, which are designed specifically to provide electrical safety.
Main Responsibilities
- Research and develop electromagnetic materials, components and technologies for use in switchgear products. Work as part of a team to design and integrate these into electronic circuits and devices.
- Develop innovative concepts and solutions. Capture patentable ideas and designs (IP).
- Follow a structured research and development process.
- Participate in dFMEA reviews on new product designs.
- Provide research support to design engineers.
- Keep up to date with research and technology advancements in the industry.
- Prepare technical papers and reports.
Requirements
- Qualified ideally to PhD level (Masters Level minimum) in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Physics or a related discipline.
- Strong background in the following areas is essential:
- electromagnetics and electro-mechanical devices
- power electronics and analog electronic design
- Minimum of 5 years experience in a research and development role in a related field or industry
- Experience in the use of electronic and electro-magnetic software simulation tools is desirable.
- Ability to devise and develop innovative solutions combined with methodical problem solving skills.
- Ability to work as part of a team is essential.
- Occasional travel may be necessary.
Job Specification for: Mechanical Design Engineer

Main Responsibilities
- Design of mechanical components, in particular electrical switching mechanisms.
- Design plastic components for use in electrical accessories.
- Conduct detailed mechanical analysis (stress, FMEA, thermal, tolerance analysis, reliability, etc) of existing products to determine weaknesses and implement improvements.
- Specify plastic and metal materials suitable for various applications.
- Produce 3D models and 2D drawings.
- Build and test prototype metal and plastic parts and manage the related sourcing and quality issues.
- Support electronics engineers working on projects with mechanical components.
- Work closely with toolmakers making injection and compression moulding tools for plastic parts.
- Work closely with vendors on supply of pressed, turned and plastic parts.
- Use precision measurement equipment to verify dimensional accuracy of mechanical components.
- Assist in transfer of products from design to manufacturing.
- Work to exacting international product standards.
- Communicate project status and progress on a regular basis.
Qualifications / Experience / Skills / Attributes
- Degree level mechanical or electro-mechanical.
- Minimum of three years relevant experience.
- Able to work in a highly flexible team environment.
- Good knowledge of 3D CAD, preferably Solid Works.
- Good knowledge of basic electrical principles.
- Understanding of basic principles of magnetics.
- Familiarity with electro - mechanical devices.
- Knowledge of simulation techniques, including FEA.
- Able to apply FMEA methodology.
- Good knowledge of materials and their properties, especially plastics and metals used in the switchgear industry.
- Understanding of manufacturing processes used for moulded, pressed and turned parts and of the relevant design considerations.
- Communications: Fluent written and spoken English with excellent record keeping and report writing skills are required.

Main Responsibilities
- Carry out comprehensive electrical and electronic testing of design prototypes and finished products to international standards in our on-site test laboratory.
- Design, build and commission new test equipment for the test lab as required.
- Qualification testing of new components and new product configurations.
- Support product design effort by managing a busy test schedule.
- Audit test of released product as part of QA effort.
- Evaluation of competitive product.
- Ability to debug and repair product to component level.
- Prepare and present test reports and analysis of test data.
- Assist in measurement and assessment of small mechanical components.
Qualifications / Experience / Skills / Attributes
- Degree in Electronic Engineering.
- Minimum 3 years experience.
- Basic competence in PLC programming.
- Comfortable working with “Mains” electrical supply and suitably safety conscious.
- Ability to work as part of a team in a fast paced environment.
- Willing to innovate and take the initiative on new ideas and improvements.
- While test engineering is an essential part of the role initially, we are seeking a candidate with the potential to move into other areas of the business when a suitable opportunity arises. For example, general electronics skills and knowledge should be sufficient to allow expansion into product design in the R&D department. This will require an individual who is creative, versatile and has an aptitude for technical problem solving.

- Ability to work both as part of a highly flexible team and on your own.
- Some experience of FMEA methodology would be an advantage.
- Some experience of working with “Mains” voltages would be an advantage.
- Knowledge of basic electro-mechanical devices.
